Dr Mahaveer Mehta’s story takes us back to the 1960s, all the way to Rajasthan in India. Medical facilities were scanty and patients would line up at clinics and hospitals, waiting to get treated; sadly, in no particular queue, were those poor people who couldn’t afford any treatment. As a child, this was the sight that Dr Mahaveer remembers to this day. And in his innocence all those years ago, he wanted to do something about it. Mahatma Gandhi, the man whose teachings and values inspire him until this day said : "Be the change that you wish to see". So he decided to become a doctor. Back in those days in India, intention wasn’t enough. His family couldn’t afford the expensive medical education he desired so he had to fund his own education. That didn’t deter him and against all odds, he accomplished his mission. In October 1978, he added the coveted ‘Dr’ prefix to his name. Early on, his goal was clear. He wanted to pioneer breakthroughs that needed no surgery in his chosen field : Dermatology. Today, decades later, Dr Mahaveer is a happy man. He lives his mission day after day, driven by the smile of his happy patients – and it is this dedication and passion that brings him to the work every morning. And Dr Mahaveer lives up to his word of avoiding the scalpel. His patients come to him for (among other things) skin tightening, acne or injury scar removal and stubborn fat reduction – all non-surgical. It’s no wonder that his reputation travels before him. And it’s his patients who are his publicity managers. He is famous for his honest views, for not prescribing needless tests and for being the final word in ‘second opinions’. While ‘Dr Miracle’ and ‘Magician’ are testimonies enough, great praise came from the ruler of a Middle Eastern country who described Dr Mahaveer as ‘a blessing’ for him and his people. But for Dr Mahaveer, the biggest compliment is when his treatment changes someone’s life. Like it did for a patient who was part of the cabin crew in a prestigious airline. She suffered from Vitiligo, which caused her skin to develop unsightly white patches. This affected her job (she was asked to leave) and her relationship (her fiancé wanted to breakup). She heard about Dr Mahaveer and paid him a visit. Today, she’s 95% cured – and keeps the same job and the same husband! Now, that’s a cure which truly impacts someone’s life. Today Dr Mahaveer is a widely quoted authority in Dermatology and Laser Advances, practicing in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He’s been appointed the International Mentor for the American Society of Dermatology Surgery and the International Society of Dermatology Surgery. He’s also a Director on the Board of Dermatology & Aesthetics Surgery International League (DASIL) and he’s regularly invited to chair and speak at various conferences on Dermatology and laser treatment around the world. In addition, he is committed to preventing skin cancer through awareness and early diagnosis. His favorite catchphrase is ‘Spot and Stop’ – spot the cancer and stop its spread. Another favorite is more common: ‘Prevention is better than cure’. Dr Mahaveer moved to Dubai in 1990. It’s his ‘home away from home’ where his family feels secure and enjoys a better lifestyle. In his free time (which isn’t much) amongst many things, he is a Board Member of the Rotary Club International and he plays golf regularly to keep himself fit.
