Aziza has over 17 years’ experience as an osteopath. She graduated from the British School of Osteopathy with a BSc (Hons) degree in London in 2003. She has since worked extensively in the public and private sectors in her hometown of Mombasa in Kenya and spent the last decade treating patients with a range of ailments in Dubai. Osteopathy is a manual therapy that aims to optimize health and improve function across the body by using hands-on (non-invasive and drug-free) techniques to diagnose and carry out the treatment. Patients generally present with pain, and conditions treated vary from vertigo to back pain, headaches, postural issues, sports injuries, and post-surgical rehabilitation. In recent years, Aziza’s interest in breathing mechanics has led her to incorporate capnometry into her sessions, which has advanced her ability to assist with digestive, circulatory/lymphatic issues and to improve sleep cycles. Patients of all ages can benefit from osteopathic treatment, from infants to expectant mothers and the elderly. Common conditions treated include: Colic Sciatica Arthritis Torticollis Joint pain Plagiocephaly TMJ (jaw) dysfunction Prolapsed Intervertebral (‘slipped’) Discs Repetitive strain injuries (e.g. tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, texting thumb – yes, it’s a thing!) Each patient’s problem is unique. The treatment, therefore, varies from person to person, and an osteopath’s goal is to determine the root cause of the symptoms. This is then addressed using structural, functional, visceral, and cranio-sacral techniques, and supported by patient education and simple exercises. Osteopathy is considered a complementary therapy as it works alongside conventional medicine to promote well-being and – particularly in the case of athletes – improve performance. Patients may be referred for scans or tests when necessary, or for further management by other specialists such as dentists, orthopaedic physicians, physiotherapists if needed. Aziza is a member of the Emirates Medical Association and sits on the board of the Emirate Osteopathic Society as the Cultural Committee Chairperson.
